Buffalo woman who killed boyfriend with statue to be deported, sentenced to 22.5 years in jail

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Debra Haynes-Thomas, 48, will spend 22.5 years in prison after fatally striking her boyfriend with a ceramic statue.

Peter Weipert, 56, fell asleep in his Cheektowaga home on Princess Drive after an argument with Haynes-Thomas, a Buffalo resident and native of Trinidad. This is when Haynes-Thomas struck him in the head multiple times, killing him.

Police investigating the scene thereafter said they could smell natural gas coming from inside the home. They went inside and found every burner on a gas stove turned on with a candle lit next to it.

This is when police began to ventilate the home. Soon after, Weipert was found covered in blankets and pillows in his bed.

This led police to charge Haynes-Thomas with manslaughter.

In addition to jail time, Haynes-Thomas was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision.

She will be deported back to Trinidad.
