AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — A program that sends children home from school with a bag of food on Fridays is happening between now and June 18.
News 4 has teamed up with Wegmans and the Food Bank of Western New York to raise enough money, and food, for children who rely on school meals during the week, and often don’t have food to eat over the weekend.
The bags are at the end of each checkout line at your local Wegmans, and you simply add it to your order to help feed these children.
Several of the children in the program shared their experiences, and favorite items, with News 4. See what they say in the video above.
“It’s amazing. We’re making a huge difference for these families,” Stephanie Lawson, who is in charge of the program, said. “We’re working to expand our programs even further.”
When the program started in 2010, it was only in three Erie County schools. This year, 30 schools across four counties are involved.
Although the program is meant to help the children, their parents find relief knowing they will have enough to feed them over the weekend. Two mom’s share their experience in the video below.
Fill the Backpack’s goal is to collect 150,000 pounds of food this year. On day one this year, Wegmans stores collected more than 10,500 pounds of food.
The deadline for collections is June 18.
The Food Bank also accepts donations through its website year-round.
