BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — As warmer weather arrives and people are away from their homes more frequently, police say they could be making themselves easy targets for quick crimes.
Police refer to these acts as crimes of opportunity because the victim is unknowingly giving criminals easy ways to commit crimes. These crimes vary from home and car break-ins to burglaries.
Police say more often than not, the victim doesn’t know the offender but the criminal can know a lot about this person’s life by habits they have and what they do. Police say the easiest way to become a target in these types of crimes to make it obvious that you aren’t home or around.
“These people typically don’t want to get involved with a confrontation — they want to get into an empty house,” said Trooper Jim O’Callaghan. “They want to go into an empty car — they don’t want to have issues – they just want some merchandise, get in, get out and go to the next place.”
