Convicted sex offender arrested for second time in months

GAINESVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) — A previously convicted sex offender is back behind bars after police say he violated conditions of his release.

Officers arrested 39-year-old Eric Hartman, of Gainesville, for accessing he internet via a cellphone, police say. Hartman saw release in May after he had been arrested in April on charges of contacting, then having a sexual encounter with a 16-year-old. Part of his release required him to notify police when accessing the internet and disclose all accounts used.

Police surveillance found Hartman, a level two sex offender, used multiple accounts online from a phone, but didn’t notify police within 10 days.

Hartman has been jailed without bail in the Wyoming County Jail as his trial moves forward. He now faces charges of sex offender registry violation, a felony, in addition to his previous case. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
