BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Auston Matthews is the prize of the 2016 NHL Draft, a prize the Toronto Maple Leafs will no doubt select with the first overall pick on June 24.
The 18-year-old Matthews hails from Phoenix, Arizona, a rarity among elite NHL prospects of years past. He played in Switzerland this past season, amassing 46 points in just 36 games.
NHL Director of Central Scouting Dan Marr said Matthews would have been in the same conversation as Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid had he been eligible for the 2015 draft.
“Auston Matthews is the complete package,” he told reporters at the combine.
