WARSAW, N.Y. (WIVB) — Search teams continue to search for the body of a presumed-dead boy after finding his brother’s remains. The two children died amid a plunge over the lower falls at Letchworth State Park on Saturday.
Officials say a family of seven had hiked the beloved New York State Park, but traveled off of safe trails Saturday. Calls for help rang out at 6:30 p.m., when officials reported seven people who became swept up in currents and rushed over the side of the park’s lower falls.
Rescue began soon after, with first responders pulling adults from the water, however during the response, two family members had gone missing. Search began for two brothers, aged 6 and 9, by underwater teams and helicopters.
On Sunday afternoon, police pulled the body of 6-year-old Preston Giangregorio, a Brockport native, from the water. Search continues for his brother, 9-year-old Dylan Giangregorio.
Police say they are actively continuing their search but presume Dylan to have perished in the fall. They have closed down all areas around the lower falls as they press forward.
Investigation is also continuing into how the fall occurred, but police currently are only saying all seven family members fell in while attempting to help a fallen family member escape the water.
