House fire in Batavia

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two toddlers perished in a fatal May fire at a Batavia home, but investigators now say they believe it sparked in the boys’ room.

Firefighters rushed in waves to the Town of Batavia home on May 21, where they learned two boys were alone in the first floor apartment. When they entered the home, they found the bodies of the children, only identified as toddler age. Investigation ensued the tragic deaths, with fire investigators and Genesee County Sheriff’s Office officials working together.

Deputies said on Wednesday they’ve progressed their investigation to a point where they are releasing some details, although the official cause is still under investigation.

Officials say the fire, which wasn’t electrical, began in the boys’ bedroom, but they say they learned both children had been home alone at the time of the fire.

Investigation will continue until investigators settle upon an official cause of the fire. Authorities have yet to file any charges. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
