CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police vehicles clustered around a fatal motorcycle accident on Genesee St. in Cheektowaga Thursday morning.

After News 4 cameras captured a body bag being taken from the scene, Cheektowaga Police confirmed the crash victim to be 25-year-old Andrew Berghold, a resident of the town and former resident of Depew.

The motorcycle involved was seen in some tall grass off the road.

Police say the motorcyclist failed to negotiate the curve, and struck a pole. Authorities are still piecing together the incident and think speed may have been a factor according to witness statements.

Assistant Chief Jim Speyer, with the Cheektowaga Police Department, said, “It looks as if he was traveling at a high rate of speed, it’s just a single vehicle accident, there were no other vehicles involved, so apparently he was traveling at a speed he couldn’t handle.”

With any fatal accident, as standard procedure, police will also be looking into whether or not drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. A toxicology test will be conducted.
