BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Jakob Chychrun is the top-rated defenseman in this years draft according to central scouting.
“He’s the real deal as far as we’re concerned,” director of central scouting Dan Marr said at this year’s combine. “He’s got size strength factor, arguably best skating defenseman in this draft. Good offensive game at the blue line, strong defensive game in his own zone.”
But, not everyone sees Chychrun that way. Playing for Sarnia of the OHL, Chychrun had to adjust to a new style of play this year and put extra emphasis on his defensive work.
“I didn’t have the ideal year I wanted and the other two d-men in the conversation had great years,” Chychrun said. “So we’ll see how it pans out.”
The Sabres could consider a trio of defenseman with the eighth pick but, what might give Chychrun has a slight edge with Buffalo given his relationship with the Pegulas.
“It’s a great hockey city. Obviously have great ownership here, I’m familiar with them.”
Chychrun grew up in Boca Raton, Florida and went to school with two of Terry and Kim’s children. Now, he could play for the family
“You know, it’d be a great place to play. They have a lot of key young pieces.”
If Chychrun is on the board at pick number eight, the Sabres would be hard-pressed to pass on him, especially if their assessment of his play this season lines up with the scouts.
