Rob Ryan joins Rex to solve Bills defensive issues

Rex's twin brother Rob speaks with the media on the last day of minicamp.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) – Second year head coach Rex hired his twin brother Rob this offseason, following a rough first year for his defense in Buffalo and Rob jumped at the chance to join the coaching staff.

“This is a fortunate situation to be able to come back and work together again,” Rob said. “We are blessed that way and we want to make it great.”

The Bills have three strong voices on the defensive coaching staff with Rex, Rob, and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman. So, there are two theories in play — either there are too many cooks in the kitchen or you can never have enough sets of eyes to help some a problem.

“It is a collaborative effort and not just with my brother and I but with Dennis, too.” The head coach said. “Obviously Dennis and I will be the primary focus but when it comes to making the calls I will make the calls.”

“We work well, we work well together,” Thurman said. “He is a guy who has been in this situation. He understands offense and he understands defense and has been valuable.”

“To be around our coaching staff is fun. It is awesome to go into a building with a guy like Dennis Thurman. It is awesome,” Rob concluded. “Knowledge is power in the NFL and it is great to be around that.”

Rex,Rob, and new defensive backs assistant coach Ed Reed are big Sabres fans and have nicknamed themselves the French Connection in typical humorous Ryan family fashion. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
