WNY native on a mission to walk country’s perimeter for homeless vets

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — Leroy Bailey started his journey two years ago, and has gone through 9 pairs of shoes since then to raise awareness for homeless veterans.

Leroy is originally from Little Valley, New York but moved to Virginia Beach over 20 years ago. His journey by foot began in June of 2014. He walked down and around Florida to Texas, then to San Diego all the way over to Seattle, Washington and so forth until eventually making it to Western New York today. He says he’s walked at least 9 thousand miles so far.

Leroy says at one point he was homeless and his own experience is what inspired him to raise money and awareness for the homeless.  He says he hopes to build hope centers for the homeless around the country.

“Some nights I stay in a hotel some nights I sleep on the side of the road some nights I sleep under bridges and some nights I meet people that give me a place to stay. I really think we need to build more things to help that people that are homeless and give them the opportunity to get back on their feet. Giving them a bed at night and kicking them out at 6 in the morning is not an opportunity to get a job,” said Bailey.

It hasn’t been easy, Leroy says along the way he sprained his ankle, broke his glasses and lost his wallet but he hasn’t let that stop him. Leroy says he plans to stop in Niagara Falls tomorrow before walking to Bangor, Maine and eventually returning to his home in Virginia Beach.
