Cheektowaga man pleads not guilty to fatal beating of teen

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Cody Jeffords, a Cheektowaga man indicted on a charge of second-degree murder, was arraigned in court Thursday.

Prosecutors say Jeffords, 21, severely beat Justin Vanderwalker, 19, in May after he came home and found him with his girlfriend.

Vanderwalker fled the apartment, but was followed by Jeffords, who proceeded to hit him with his bare hands, according to officials.

Vanderwalker was severely injured and died three days later.

In court, Jeffords pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.

If Jeffords is convicted of killing Vanderwalker, he could face 25-years-to-life in prison.

He will be back in court for a pre-trial conference on August 1. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
