BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — With the House of Representatives taking a recess after a contentious 25-plus hours, local representatives are providing an interesting perspective on the sit in that happened on the floor.
“It’s exciting,” said Rep. Brian Higgins, the Democratic Congressman representing Western New York. “This is an effort that grew up organically. It wasn’t orchestrated by leadership. It was the sentiments of rank and file members that really took to the floor to exercise our democracy.”
Across the aisle, local Republican Representative Chris Collins released this statement to News 4:
“Unfortunately, the Democrat minority has opted to employ a publicity stunt, rather than offer a meaningful solution to address the issue of terrorism threatening our country. It’s a shame they have politicized the recent tragedy in Orlando, and come to rely on such obstructionist tactics.”
Erie County Legislator, Kevin Hardwick, says the sit in is getting people talking.
“Some people have referred to it as a stunt and I think it is but it is a successful one,” said Hardwick who is also an educator at Canisius College. “The divide is there on the issues — one party is on one side of control another on the other. But this makes it personal. From the perspective of a house Republican like Paul Ryan, the Democrats are showing him up.”
Hardwick says this could create major movement for the Dems during an important election year.
“Certainly the Dems feel they can have big gains and something like this enhances their chances.”
