KENMORE, N.Y. (WIVB) — We all know that leaving the AC running all day makes for an expensive bill, but a new program called coolControl could take care of that and save you money.
The National Grid program only applies to residents who live in a specific part of Kenmore and some surrounding areas. Eligible residents can receive a free wifi device through the program that allows users to control their window and central air conditioners with an app on their smart phones. It allows you to adjust the temperature, set schedules, turn the AC on and off and monitor your energy use.
The program also connects your AC system to the National Grid network through wifi, and allows the company to change the thermostat setting and turn the AC on and off during times of high demand.
A national grid spokesman says on high demand days sometimes the network fails or it wears the equipment out faster than it should.
“When we see the demand start to peak it’s one of the triggers where say now may be the time to put this program into effect and this way the customer doesn’t have to worry about being home. It allows us very remotely to take care of this issue for you whether you’re there or not. Customers may come home and not even notice that there was a difference,” said Steve Brady, National Grid Spokesman.
Customers who participate in the program receive a cash incentive.
