PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WIVB) — A former corrections officer who helped Richard Matt and David Sweat escape from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora has been released early from prison, CNN sources say.
Although Gene Palmer was sentenced to six months in prison, he was only there for four. Sources say he was released early for good behavior.
Palmer smuggled in tools that helped Matt and Sweat escape from the prison in northern New York. The two criminals were on the run for more than three weeks before Matt was fatally shot and Sweat was captured.
Palmer’s sentence was part of a plea deal where he admitted to three of five charges against him.
Joyce Mitchell, who also smuggled in tools in an effort to help the convicts escape, is serving up to seven years in prison.
