One injured in skydiving accident on Grand Island

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says a man was injured while skydiving on Grand Island Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near the 2500 block of Love Road.

Grand Island fire officials told News 4, it was during the annual July 13 neighborhood picnic.

Officials say “when skydivers began their routines, the first one performed flawlessly and landed safely on the grassy airstrip. However, when the second skydiver, 42-year-old Jeffery Antonich of Newfane, NY jumped, he hit the ground at an estimated 40 to 50 miles per hour and sustained multiple system trauma.”

Antonich was transported to ECMC by mercy flight. He remains in critical, but stable condition.

Both the Grand Island Fire Department and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
