Overnight storm knocks down trees, thousands lose power across WNY

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) – A large tree limb came crashing down overnight on Pfohl Place in Williamsville. It happened around 3:00 a.m.near Main Street.

Amherst Police were warning residents in the area to use caution. The limb was blocking the road. A sedan is underneath the limb, the car’s owner says the tree caused a cracked windshield among other minor damage.

Verizon crews came out around 7:30 a.m. to clean up the debris and inspect the lines, the street was reopened shortly before 9 a.m.

Also overnight, Buffalo Police report 15 trees were damaged, and all of the debris has since been cleaned up.

According to National Grid, this morning more than 8,000 households lost power. As of 12:00 p.m., that number has dropped to around 500.

There were no reported injuries from the storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a “Beach Hazard” statement on the dangerous conditions – effective through Thursday night.

The weather service says life threatening waves and currents are expected. Everyone is advised to stay out of the water and away from piers and break-walls.
