“Big 4 Basketball Classic” set for December 17th

Fifth time all four Western New York schools have played in First Niagara Center in a doubleheader format.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The four division one hoops programs in western New York are set to renew their “Big 4” rivalries on December 17th at First Niagara Center.

The latest installment of the “Big 4 Basketball Classic” will be a doubleheader. St. Bonaventure will face Niagara at 1 p.m., and Canisius will take on Buffalo in the second contest. This is the fifth time that the four teams will meet in a doubleheader format. The four schools last played a true doubleheader in downtown Buffalo Nov. 29, 2014. That edition of the Big 4 Basketball Classic was the first in the area in nearly 16 years.

“In advance of the NCAA Tournament returning to Buffalo next March, we are excited to once again provide an exciting college basketball doubleheader in First Niagara Center,” Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. “Setting up an event like this takes a lot of cooperation and coordination among all four schools and First Niagara Center. Western New York basketball fans and alumni from all four schools always express their nostalgia for the Saturday doubleheaders in the Aud. The Big 4 Basketball Classic allows all four schools to pay homage to the importance of college basketball in the history in our city.”

Last year all four schools wore uniforms inspired by the Buffalo Braves. This year each school will wear a “throwback” uniform that will be selected by a fan vote. Each schools respective athletic website will allow fans to vote on which uniform they like best.

Tickets for the Big 4 Basketball Classic are on sale now and are priced at $25, with a limited number of floor seats available for purchase for $35. One ticket is good for both games. Fans can purchase tickets through Tickets.com, at the First Niagara Center Box Office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., or charge by phone at 1-888-223-6000.
