BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo firefighters will once again be holding their annual Fill the Boot program in the city.

Each year, firefighters stand at various spots in Buffalo and collect donations for charity. This year, they are raising money for the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Research Team (SMART).

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a disease that affects the voluntary muscles used in movements like walking, as well as head and neck control. It affects almost 1 in 6000 new births and is the top genetic cause of death among children younger than two years old.

On Thursday, August 4, firefighters, Buffalo Sabres players and alumni will collect donations at the following street corners:

  • Oak & Genesee
  • Elm & Swan
  • Niagara St. Exit 190
  • Delaware & Hertel
  • Skyway & Church
  • Seneca & Bailey

The drive will last from 6:30 to 9 a.m.
