Tanker crashes, catches on fire in Sardinia

SARDINIA, N.Y. (WIVB) – People sprang into action after a tanker crashed in Sardinia Saturday afternoon.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says the milk truck crashed shortly before 4 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 16 and 39. The scene was still active a few hours later.

Witnesses tell us a driver pulled out in front of the truck. The truck driver swerved to avoid the car and that’s how the milk truck ended up on its side in a ditch.

The crash sparked a small fire in the truck bed. The driver of the truck had to be extracted from the burning tanker. The ECSO has not said how the driver is doing.

News 4 has neighbors tried to assist at the scene. They used milk from the tanker to get the fire under control. Cell phone video sent to the News 4 newsroom shows people tossing milk onto the truck by the bucket.
