DEPEW, N.Y. (WIVB) – News 4 is getting to the bottom of rumors about attempted abductions in the Cheektowaga area. Some of you have written on News 4 social media pages you’re hearing of attempted kidnapping of women and children in popular shopping areas.
Cheektowaga Police now want to clear up rumors that have been circulating for a few weeks now. Social media news spread like wildfire that there have been attempted kidnappings in Target and Wegmans parking lots on Losson Road. Some even rumored to happen over the weekend.
Maria Cichocki Khangi posted this; “I have a friend who is in a task force here in Buffalo and she confirms the area is high in human trafficking. Please be careful no matter where you go.”
Meanwhile, Lori Mrugalski wrote what she had heard or saw. She said, “”In the last week or so there have been multiple incidents at Tarrget on Losson of attempted abductions, both children and adult women. And just today, there was an attempted abduction in my Wegmans parking lot. Please be watchful and careful, especially when you’re out alone with your kids. The police just told us it’s related to sex trafficking through Canada. Scary stuff.”
We spoke with the Cheektowaga Police Department who tell us there is no truth to this rumor. Assistant Chief Jim Speyer says talk about incidents like this can get out of hand on social media, but the police department has not gotten any calls for attempted abductions here over the past few weeks. Speyer said if the public is in danger in anyway, the Cheektowaga Facebook page is always up to date.
