The ‘Toll Booth Lady’ who has captured the hearts of many

LACKAWANNA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Andrea Howard is known as the Toll Booth Lady. She has worked for the New York State Thruway for the past 10 years.

Many of the drivers will tell you, she has left her mark.

Whenever they go through her booth, she greets them with, “Hey Baby! How are you doing? Enjoy your day!”

It’s her signature and it gets people every time.

We asked Howard what motivates her to go the extra mile each day. Howard responded, “There’s no harm in speaking. I mean if I see you, I’m going to speak.”

She’s humble and won’t boast about the great things she has done. Even though she won’t, that’s not stopping people from talking about it online.

There are a number of messages about the Toll Booth Lady who says, “Hey Baby” to each customer.

One woman on Facebook recently wrote, “She’s amazing at what she does. She’s always so happy and genuine and truly enjoys her job. It’s so heartwarming and cheers many people up.”

To that, and so many other messages, Howard says thank you.

She learned the art of greeting others from her mother. “She always said, ‘If you can’t speak, don’t (let your feet) touch my floor,’ and that little lady meant that,” Howard said.

As a result, she carries on the tradition. She greets each person with a smile on her face and warmth in her heart. It may be something small, but that, “Hey baby,” brightens up so many people’s days. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
