NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Scary moments unfolded on the Niagara River at the 25th annual Buffalo Poker Run.

A Williamsville man is in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of Erie County Medical Center after his boat flipped over Saturday morning.

Witnesses tell News 4 the boat flipped on the river off Gratwick Park just before noon.

The Assistant Fire Chief for the North Tonawanda Fire Department tells us a man and a woman were thrown into the water.

The woman, also from Williamsville, was not hurt. The man, identified as Christopher Overkamp, 40, has a serious head injury and leg injuries.

“The wind kind of picked up over here and the boat was a tunnel hull boat,” said Steven McKie, president of the Buffalo Poker Run. “The speed was controlled, he wasn’t going faster than he should have. The boat just caught some air and flipped over.”

A trained EMS was at the event. He was the first person to get to the man and helped first responders stabilize him.

This is the first incident in the event’s 25 year history.
