BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Ahead of the official start of the season, Bills fans are fired up. This time, it’s about the team announcing the home field will have a new name.
After 18 years, the Ralph Wilson Stadium signs are being changed to New Era Field.
“Sometimes you have to accept change,” said Evan Camizzi, a Bills fan in support of the new name. “The name is different but for a few years people will just call it Ralph Wilson.”
Some fans say they’ve gotten used to calling it the Ralph and it’ll be tough for them to say they’re heading to a game at New Era Field which is already receiving the nickname “The Cap”.
“I understand the name change with the new owners,” said Gabrielle Mahapatra, a Bills fan. “At heart, it’ll always be Ralph Wilson Stadium.”
“The Ralph has become such a big thing with this city,” said Sandy, a fan who doesn’t like the new name. “I’ve heard that Ralph is rolling over in his grave!”
Sandy thought it was appropriate the stadium was named after the team’s founder.
“He’s done so much for the area,” said the longtime fan. “I thought it was a real honor to have that stadium named after him.”
Other fans look to what’s happening all around the city and say it’s time to shake up things in the Southtowns stadium.
“The impossible has happened already,” said Camizzi. “The steel mills in South Buffalo – there’s construction happening there. It’s a new era.”
