Buffalo man who tried to renew dead man’s passport sentenced

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Prosecutors sentenced a man to time served (six months) in jail after he tried to renew the passport of a dead man.

Buffalo resident Porfirio Rosa, 74, sent a passport renewal application, which includes a name, social security number and birth date to the Western Passport Center in Arizona this past October. He sent it under the name Luis Rosa.

Luis Rosa died in 1995.

Porfirio tried to back up his claim of being Luis by also sending in an expired passport from 2003 that bore the name Luis Rosa.

When he was arrested, prosecutors say Porfirio had a number of New York State ID cards and Social Security cards with different names in his possession.
