Local magazine captures Buffalo culture

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — There’s a new magazine focused on Buffalonians, and it’s ready to hit store shelves. The magazine was created and put together by just one woman – everything from the writing, to the design and photography.

Elizabeth Siematkowski, the creator of the magazine, said, “So it’s kind of like the day in the life of individuals in the city who I feel are doing amazing things and kind of going through extreme lengths to be themselves sort of thing.”

Siematkowski is ready for her new magazine to launch, it’s called “Buffalo Black Book”. The magazine focuses on people in Buffalo who dedicate themselves to music, the arts, or even a unique business.

But getting to this point was not easy – before evolving into the roughly 80 page professionally printed work, Buffalo Black Book originally started out as a small, handmade fold-able square. Siematkowski would make hundreds of them, and place them all over the city.

“And then people started to kind of email me and it started to take off a little bit, and I was like, you know what, this is something actually really special, and I think people are curious about each other.”

After deciding to expand her project, Siematkowski learned all of the quirks of making her own magazine on her own, everything from the design, the photography, all of the way down to the UPC code on the back.

“So I watched YouTube videos, read everything I could, talked to anyone I could, taught myself in-design, I found some publications I loved and just worked backwards.”

With the magazine being planned for a quarterly release, Siematkowski says the whole process has been a journey.

“So that’s another really wonderful thing about the project, is that it kind of pushes me to keep learning and growing, and I hope that gifts individuals that are reading it in the same way.”
