Ways to save on back-to-school shopping

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Thousands of students are heading back to public schools next week. We all know, getting the best back-to-school clothes is very important for many families.

According to the National Retail Federation, back-to-school shopping is the second largest shopping season for retailers.
On average, they say families plan to spend a total of $361 on shoes, clothes, and accessories.

News 4 decided to see how far $100 could go at a local clothing reseller. That’s why we went to Once Upon a Child in Tonawanda. The local clothing reseller buys and sells, gently used kids clothes.

“Parents are always thinking about efficiency, cost savings, and how to get a bang for their buck,” Phylicia Dove, the owner of I am PhyNomenal.

Dove recommends clothing resellers or consignment shops as an option for growing children.

“Kids wear things for only a few months. You want to buy a lot of the high priced items. You like a lot of the classic brands. But, when you spend $68 for a sweater and your kid doesn’t wear it after two months. It’s kind of like, what was I thinking? Therefore, if you go to a reseller, you have options. You can get that same classic outfit and save tons of money.”

We asked Dove to show us some outfits under $100 for a boy and girl going to kindergarten. For boys, Dove found 8 pieces that could be used interchangeably in different outfits for about $79. For girls, she found seven items for $44.05.

You can see the outfits she picked out in the video above.

Another way to save on school clothes is by hosting or attending a clothing swap party. They take place in cities throughout the country. Sometimes, people charge a cover free. Other times, it’s free to attend a clothing swap party. That way participants are able to walk away with gently used clothes that others in the neighborhood had.
