CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police say Barry Fiume, 62, was killed after he was unable to escape a house fire on Peoria Avenue Monday afternoon.
When News 4 crews arrived to the scene the home was fully engulfed in flames. First responders say it took a total of 6 companies to put the fire out.
Firefighters say the fire started in the upstairs bedroom and spread throughout the home. After battling the fire for nearly two hours, the home was declared a total loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Assistant Chief Jim Speyer with the Cheektowaga Police Department said, “The fire started on the second floor, and there’s no apparent reason right up front that’s obvious to everybody. It’s going to be looked at in all possibilities, we don’t leave any stone unturned, and there will be a thorough investigation.” Assistant Chief Speyer added, “I know that some of the neighbors had said that there were some problems with Barry as far as some mental issues. We can confirm that we have had a couple of run ins or a couple of incidents with some mental issues with the victim here.”
