Local schools back in session, beginning new year

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Thousands of children are back in school after having the summer off.  Most of Western New York started up again Tuesday, kicking off a new year.

“It’s just so exciting you can feel it throughout the building,” said Dan Lewis, the principal at Smallwood Elementary School.

“One of the best things about being a teacher and a student is that come September – you have a fresh start,” said Jenny Ramsey, a fifth grade teacher at Smallwood.  “It’s a lot of get to know you activities.”

Educators say the first is a big day and it is really important as it sets the tone for the rest of the year.

“We know that one of the most important things that happen with kids is building relationships so that very first connection with teachers on that day is so so important,” said Lewis.
