Uncontrollable coughing leads driver to pass out, crash

TOWN OF POLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — Deputies with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office say a driver who could not stop coughing passed out and crashed in the Town of Poland.

Around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, deputies say David Johnson Jr., 63, was driving on Route 394 before he left the roadway and struck a National Grid pole, breaking it in half.

As live wires came down on the road and several parked cars, deputies say Johnson’s vehicle then traveled another 100 yards through a lawn and finally stopped when it crashed into a tree.

Route 394 was closed for hours following the crash.

Although he suffered a severe broken nose, authorities say Johnson’s seatbelt saved him from life-threatening injuries.

Deputies say charges related to the incident are pending.
