Local developer eyeing iconic Mickey Rats

ANGOLA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Earlier this summer, as Mickey Rats was hosting its biggest bash of the summer on July 4th, managers and patrons were asked about rumors that the iconic southtowns beach spot was up for sale.

At the time, most everyone scoffed, saying business was good and it would be business as usual for the foreseeable future.

It turns out, however, Mickey Rats might be on the auction block.

Carl Paladino, president and chairman of Ellicott Development, confirmed to News 4 Wednesday his company was doing its  “due diligence” and considering a purchase.

Mickey Rats has been around for 43 years. For decades, the place has drawn thousands to the Lake Erie shore every July 4th for its biggest party.

Rumors were circulating this summer that Mickey Rats was up for sale. Managers then said that was the first they’d heard about it, and emphasized the fact that the rumor is a common one.

“We’ve been here for 43 years, I’ve worked here for 27 years, and every other year, there’s a rumor that someone’s going to buy the place, they’re going to build condos and they’re going to do something. It happens all the time, and we’re still here,” said manager Wayne Griem. “We’re not going anywhere. We’re not going to be bulldozed. We’ll be here next year, and the year after that. We’ll be around for awhile.”

Whether Mickey Rats will be around for another 43 years remains in question. But managers are hoping they’ll be around for the next seven because preparations are already underway for Mickey Rats 50th celebration. And if July 4, 2016, is any indication, that party is going to be a blast.
