Mother of twin toddlers killed in Batavia fire charged

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The mother of the twin toddlers killed in a Batavia fire this past May has been charged.

On the night of May 20, Michael and Micah Gard were killed after a fire began in the boys’ bedroom. The boys were home alone at the time, but their mother, Heather Ace, returned shortly after the fire began, investigators say.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office says Ace, 25, was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child after being accused of leaving the boys home alone.

Authorities say they were left there for about an hour and a half, and that their mother did not arrange to have anyone watch them.

Ace will appear in court on October 3. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
