ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — The top things to expect- tight security– traffic– and tailgating. Fans say they’re pumped up the national spotlight will be on the city and home team for the home opener. ”
“The home opener is always special,” said Richard Peterson, a Bills season ticket holder.
Add on the fact it’s a night game against a division rival on national tv and this home opener has some serious significance for fans.
“The jets are the jets,” said Peterson. “They’re going be hungry. We beat them five times in a row. It’s going to be interesting.”
The Bills are coming home after a tough loss in Baltimore so fans hope their energy will help propel the team to a victory.
“Everybody is excited,” said Peterson. “The city is ready go and it’s an awesome time.”
“When you’ve been a Bills fan for most of your life, you’re always optimistic this time of year,” said Gerry Meiler. “‘Where aould you rather be than right here right now?'”
You might recognize that Marv Levy line Gerry Meiler is using to sum up his excitement for the game. He’s been a season ticket holder for 25 years and has seen it all.
“I’ve been there for the Super Bowl years and I’ve been there for 0-16. I’m a lifelong fan.”
As a lifelong fan, he’s seen his share of changes. He’s supporting the new tightened security measures coming to the stadium.
“Anytime I see armed law enforcement with real guns I’m feeling more secure.”
He thinks the metal detectors are good for safety but feels there should be patdowns still.
“I think the concern is still alcohol and glass containers.”
“Fans say they’ll definitely be celebrating this game Buffalo style which includes the essentials– food, family and football.
“Only in buffalo is a three hour game a 72 hour event,” said Meiler.
“I think it’s going to be pandamonium as Van [Miller] used to say,” said Peterson as his tailgating crowd breaks into the Let’s Go Buffalo chant – a chant the country will hear in primetime when the Bills take on the Jets.
