ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) – Orchard Park Police have Big Tree Road closed near Route 219 as utility crews work to repair damage from an early morning accident.

Police closed Route 20A (Big Tree Road) from Centre Drive to Cobham Drive. Overnight police Lt. Joe Ray told News 4, “…an intoxicated driver struck a telephone pole.” The crash left 300 customers in the immediate area without power.

Police say the pole was also an intersecting pole for a long transmission line, and they expect this to lead to a prolonged power outage. “This may be town wide, but NYSEG will try to reroute power to affected areas as possible,” Lt. Ray said in a prepared news release.

Because of this accident, South Davis Elementary School in Orchard Park is CLOSED due to a power outage. Staff should still report. Orchard Park Middle School will have a 10:30 a.m. dismissal also due the power outage.

Officers found the truck and the driver involved in the accident about 1/2 mile away on Thorn Avenue. They arrested Anthony Peters, 21 and charged him with DWI, possession of an open container of alcohol in a moving vehicle, and numerous other traffic infractions. Police say Peters will be arraigned later today.
