BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- A family of eight from Somalia is now the proud owner of a Habitat for Humanity home. A crowd gathered for a dedication ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
It’s the 285th home the organization has sold to a partner family.
The family had to put in 500 hours of sweat equity helping Habitat for Humanity volunteers on the Marilla St. home.
The six children also had to get good grades in school. The Niagara Frontier Reading Council presented the children with a brand new basket of books to help them in their new start.
The family says it means a lot to be in their new house.
“I’m going to make sure we have our own house to live, to be happy in, so I’m happy my dream went through,” said Ali Mwechiwa. “I’m proud to be in this house with my family.”
Habitat has at least half a dozen other projects in the works around the city.
