GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — Representatives of St. Stephen School in Grand Island say a mass illness forced officials to cancel classes Monday.

Of the 216 students and 17 teachers at the school, 38 families and seven teachers were sick. The cause is believed to be a 24-hour stomach illness.

In addition to a cancelled school day, a swim meet and a baseball game over the weekend were also cancelled.

The school has hired a cleaning crew to rid the school and buses of the sickness. They hope to reopen their doors on Tuesday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
