BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – You can now take a trip back in time by staying in a 19th century train station right in Buffalo. It’s one of the most unique local properties up for rent on “Air BnB.”
For 30 years the station was part of the “belt-line” and formed a belt around Buffalo.
The station in Central Park on Amherst and Starin is called the Bennett Station. It was owned by the Buffalo Cement company. After WWI it essentially ceased to exist because the train had to compete with the trolley and the car. Now, it is the last standing railway house involved in the belt-line railway.
Marty Reed is the Property Manager. He said, “Once you hit the cobblestone driveway, you’re almost like out of the city and you’re entering this other realm.” There were originally 19 stops on this train around Buffalo, bringing with it some famous faces like William McKinley.
Reed said, “The people that have been through here. Mckinley came through here this was his last stop, he had died and had come here through Niagara Falls.”
The station was sold to the boy scouts and was used as its headquarters until after WWII. It is now privately owned. Reed said, “It had been abandoned from the boy scouts, and it was a local teen hangout partying, empty beer bottles and cans, cats, dogs…”
The new owners remodeled the entire building, turning it into their new home. It’s now compete with 3 floors of winding staircases, a pool, and some modern furnishings. Reed said ,”The outside looks like the train station, the inside looks like IKEA!”
Now its available for rent, peaking the interest of tourists and locals alike. One of the tenants was Chadwick Boseman while he was in Buffalo filming “Marshall.”
Something to note, the train station is still functioning and used by Conrail. So if you’re interested in renting, get used to hearing it chugging along in your backyard.
The owner of the house is Patrick Nehin. He tells us he travels all over the world, but his favorite place to stay is in the Bennett Station house. If you’re interested in renting the property, it goes for about $200 a night. Here is the link to the Air BnB rental website.
