BUFFALO, NY. (WIVB) — Buffalo’s favorite sweet treat, sponge candy, is being celebrated by many around the city.  This marks the second annual National Sponge Candy Day.

It’s a busy day at Fowler’s Chocolates as they’re preparing for the holiday.  They’re making around 10 batches of sponge candy today.

“It’s the greatest day of the year isn’t it?,” quips Ted Marks, the president at Fowler’s Chocolates. “It’s national sponge candy day.”

Sponge candy is the company’s signature and best-selling candy. They sell more than 35,000lbs. each year.

“It”s just a Fowler’s tradition to make quality candy,” said Bob, one of the head candy makers at the factory.

The recipe and process has been the same since the early 1900’s.

“People expect certain things from Fowlers and we want to deliver on those expectations,” said Marks.

He says he’s not sure why the treat has such a following in the Queen City but people are embracing this holiday.

“It’s something in the water that makes Buffalonians love their sponge candy.”
