Empowering women the focus of special Woman Up Conference in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Empowering women was the focus of a special Woman Up conference today at Buffalo’s Pierce Arrow Museum.

Kim Pegula took the stage at the first inaugural Woman Up conference to share her journey as a mother, wife, and business woman in professional sports.

“One of the most important things that I think Kim mentioned was that we are owners of businesses who just happen to be women,” said Nicole Savage, attendee.

“I also liked how Kim was talking about how she was thrown into everything and she just did it and she didn’t think about she was a woman doing it, and she just did it,” said  Kathleen Farinacci, attendee.

Pegula talked about what she always thought she would be doing, and how things turned out differently. She said failures in business and in her personal life have shaped who she is today.

Pegula is one of several speakers who spoke to a room full of more than 200 women from different fields and backgrounds.

“The event is really expanding on letting women re-frame the way they look at themselves, being able to be varied and think of themselves as successes to be able to move forward in their own personal development,” said Jean Filipiak, Woman Up facilitator.

A series of discussions throughout the event focused on networking, professional development, and wellness.

“I’m in construction and there’s lawyers and there’s people from insurance companies and business owners altogether and it empowers us to just come together and see how we all deal with all the Western New York problems and all the different situations that life has to offer,” said Farinacci.

APA solutions which runs the Woman Up conference is planning on hosting different events for specific groups like women in construction and women in finance. There’s also plans for another Woman Up conference in 2017.
