Woman killed by train in Dunkirk was trying to save her dog

Middle Road Dunkirk where a train hit a person Wednesday morning, the person died.

DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Dunkirk Police have identified the woman who was fatally struck by a train just after midnight Wednesday.

Athena Dipirro, 37, a Dunkirk resident, was walking along the CSX Railway with her dog when a westbound train began to approach.

In an attempt to save her dog, who was near the tracks, Dipirro stepped onto the train’s path. This led to the fatal collision.

The incident was called “a tragic accident” by police.
