BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Buffalo Sabres are getting ready to start their new season in the newly named KeyBank Center, with new lighting, new wifi capabilities, and new food items on the menu.
Delaware North unveiled several of the new food options Thursday morning ahead of the start of the Sabres regular season next week.
Many of the items have Western New York written all over them, from Broadway Polish Plate (with Polish sausage, Ru’s Pierogi, and kapusta) to a new Signature Beef on Weck Burger (made with Yancy’s Fancy horseradish cheddar) to a Perry’s Ice Cream Waffle Sandwich (with Lucky Charms and Cheerios baked into the batter).
“We always try to have the local people here involved,” said Michael Gilbert, the Vice President of Administration for the Buffalo Sabres. “Any time we can do that and help the local economy, we try to do that, and this is another example of that.”
Buffalo’s “food scene is growing and becoming a spectacular thing,” added Andy Altomare, the director of food and beverage for Delaware North at the KeyBank Center. “But we didn’t want it to be just the hot sauce and blue cheese. What else is part of buffalo that we can highlight?”
Altomare says developing the new dishes took a whole team of people, and a lot of thought. “When we’re engineering menus, we always think about the ease of carrying it back to your seat and eating it without having to wear it on yourself or the head in front of you. You know, the seats are a little tough,” he explained.
That challenge spurred the creation of things like grilled cheese kabobs, which includes pieces of the sandwich skewered with fried pickle, onion ring and a jalapeno popper.
You can also try everything from Go-Ru Noodles – a Ramen noodle bar with grilled chicken – to Street Tacos – to the Westside Chicken in the Grass (chicken, spinach, caramelized onions, and roasted red pepper. That’s not to mention the new Blazing Nachos with pulled Buffalo chicken and crumbled blue cheese, and the new Sahlen’s Topped Dogs, which you can get with chipotle guacamole or sriracha ketchup and mac n’ cheese.
With so many new items available, it’s hard to pick a favorite. “I don’t want to say one thing,” Gilbert said. “Just look around. How do you pick one over the other?”
Trying all of the new foods can be a big part of the hockey-fun at the KeyBank Center this year. “The fan experience is very important to us and Delaware North has done a great job and we’re really excited for the season,” Gilbert said.
