Supported Employment program helps people with disabilities find jobs

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — For Theresa Woody, her position at Quality Bindery Services is not just a job, it’s a labor of love.

“The atmosphere here is so wonderful they treat me very nice,” said Theresa Woody, Quality Bindery Services Employee.

She works in the shop and cleans two days a week.

“I’ve been here for 13 years,” said Woody.

Steven Wallace has also worked for the printing business for more than 15 years. Both Steven and Theresa have intellectual disabilities.

“They’re very routine oriented and I think that’s maybe one of the keys is that you have to find a skill that fits them perfectly,” said Kathleen Hartmans, Quality Bindery Services President and CEO.

They started working there in a trial run to see if it’d be a good fit, and were eventually hired as employees. Now their employer couldn’t imagine work without them.

“He primarily works in the shop although when he’s here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday he does do the cleaning in the office, he is the best cleaner in the world for a guy cause Theresa’s a great cleaner too but he is just meticulous about what he does,” said Hartmans.

Through People Inc’s Supported Employment program, a job coach checks in with both Theresa and Steven on a weekly basis.

“You have to sell the business on the fact that this individual does need support but really in the end it’s a bonus for everybody because that job coach is going to make sure they’re doing the job and doing it correctly,” said Tina Polito, People Inc. Director of Supported Employment.

“I like my employees and my co-workers they’re wonderful people,” said Woody.
