Buffalo volunteers head to Haiti to help with medical, relief efforts

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – As Hurricane Matthew moves across the coast of the United States, it’s already done deadly damage to parts of Haiti.  Now, some Western New York volunteers will soon head to some of the most damaged areas to help with recovery efforts. And you too can help.

Katie Braisted and Nick Stroczkowski have been to Haiti before as part of the Western New York Impact Foundation.

Stroczkowski said, “When we go down, Katie and a group of other physicians, They go down and they do medical clinics in different parts of the area. These are parts that have been hit the hardest.”

Now they’ll leave on October 19th, but this time it will be a different kind of trip. Braisted said, “I can imagine what we might see is a lot of acute injuries and maybe not even medically is where we’ll be needed, as much but more cleanup efforts.”

They’ve seen what happens to friends there after a 2007 hurricane, A 2010 earthquake and now this. Braisted said, “You hear of a place that’s poor like Haiti, that has gone through so much, and now you hear that something this horrible is happening to them again.”

The volunteers say through the Western New York Impact Foundation, you can guarantee that the money goes directly towards Haitians. There’s no middle man, and when working with a corrupt system these volunteers say that’s important.

The volunteers are now looking for donations. If you’d like to help with monetary donations or by donating medical supplies, you can send it to the WNY Impact Foundation.
