Drag racers plead guilty in fatal Colden crash

COLDEN, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two Holland residents have admitted to their roles in a deadly drag race from this past April.

Kody Schroeder, 20, and Mercedes Castillo, 18, were driving separate vehicles on Center St. in Colden when Schroeder crashed into a pickup truck.

Schroeder and Castillo were racing before the crash — an event which killed Schroeder’s passenger, 28-year-old Chauncey Kloiber, of Wales.

Another person in Schroeder’s car was seriously injured.

Following the crash, both Schroeder and Castillo were arrested. Schroeder ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault. Castillo pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and assault.

When sentenced in December, Schroeder could spend up to 15 years in jail and Castillo could be in prison for four years.
