Genesee County Sheriff warns of new phone scam

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new phone scam.

According to officials, a fake utility company is calling people to tell them that their payments are overdue, and if they do not make an immediate cash payment in person, their service will be shut off within an hour.

The Sheriff’s Office says this is a scam, and that actual utility companies would not demand payments in this manner. In addition to that, utility companies do not accept payments with a “green dot” card or by Western Union.

Legitimate companies take payments through their website, call centers or mail.

Anyone with questions should contact their utility company through the number provided on their bills or in the phone book. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
