Scholar Athlete: Austin Reamsnyder

Maryvale senior to leave behind a legacy of winning when he attends college to pursue degree in engineering

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — News 4’s Scholar Athlete series has returned for 2016, highlighting the Western New York high school seniors who excel both on the field and in the classroom.

Our first Scholar Athlete is Maryvale senior Austin Reamsnyder. He maintains a 3.9 GPA, is third in his class and hopes to attend Cornell to study engineering.

Austin has also spent four years as a member of the Flyers’ varsity football team and has been a captain since his sophomore year.

“We were at a crossroads at our program where we were just trying to finish the season, not have kids quit,” coach Jeff Buccieri said of Austin’s freshman year, when he made the team.

“How bad was it?” Austin says with a smile. “We won two games.”

“From his sophomore year on, he’s been a captain and we’ve just taken off from there, we’ve been a very successful program,” said Buccieri.

The Flyers have made the playoffs each of the past three seasons and will take on Dunkirk this Friday in the quarterfinal round. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
