NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police are investigating a small explosion in Niagara Falls which left a nearly foot-long crater in the pavement of a basketball court at Legends Park.
Officers received numerous calls from people who heard a loud boom in the area of Portage Road at 11th Street Tuesday night.
At this time, there have been no reports of injuries or damage.
Niagara Falls Police Chief Bryan DalPorto says there was a bomb detecting dog checking the area as a precaution after the explosion. The FBI and ATF have assisted the Niagara Falls Police Department in the ongoing investigation.
Chief DalPorto says his department is currently waiting for forensic results to come back in to help determine what exploded. Police are also reviewing surveillance video from in and around the park.
“As always, we take this and all incidents seriously,” Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster said in a written statement released Tuesday night, as the investigation into the explosion continued to unfold.
As of Wednesday morning, officers had cleared the area and the park was deemed ‘safe.’
