State trooper struck, killed by car near Saratoga Springs

Trooper Timothy Pratt

WILTON, NY (NEWS10) – Around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, a State Trooper was hit by a car on Ballard Road in Wilton, near Saratoga Springs.

The troop commander says Trooper Timothy Pratt was crossing the road to assist the driver of a tractor trailer parked in the median when he was struck by a silver SUV.

State police say Pratt was helping the driver of the tractor trailer to cross to the side of the road. When Pratt approached the tractor trailer an SUV driving on the road hit him.

Pratt was taken to Saratoga Hospital in serious condition and then flown to Albany Med where he succumbed to his injuries.

Pratt was a 30-year veteran at the Wilton Barracks. Pratt’s coworkers describe him as a beloved member of the community who was always first to volunteer for police-involved community events.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1979-1986.

Trooper Pratt lived in South Glens Falls, and is survived by his fiancée, two sons and a daughter.

Part of the road near Traver Road and Northern Pines Road is closed off for accident reconstruction, which officials say could take several hours. State police say the driver of the SUV is cooperating.

That’s right off of Exit 16 on the Northway and State Police are advising drivers to avoid the area.
