NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Many gun store owners saw sales go through the roof before the 2008 and 2012 elections. With just one week away from the 2016 elections, the Niagara Gun Range says they’re seeing a healthy increase in business.
Jeffrey Brodsky, the General Manager of the Niagara Gun Range said, “We haven’t done an actual count, the store has been very busy and today alone we processed 7 firearms transactions.”
Just ahead of the elections, gun sales are setting new records. The FBI says more than 2.3 million gun background checks were performed in October. That’s up from 1.9 million in September — and from 1.7 million in October 2012.
“We have a couple of factors going on – first of all, people are concerned that with the coming election there won’t be the appropriate respect for the 2nd Amendment, and we are also getting close to hunting season. Both things drive firearm sales,” said Brodsky.
Tom Kulwicki, the owner of Niagara Gun Range and Alessi Holsters in North Tonawanda, says the uptick in sales is across the board. “We have seen an increase not only in firearm sales, but also in rifle and shotgun sales.”
Kulwicki says he’s also seeing more business not only in sales, but in other services that his shop offers.
“Surprisingly enough, a lot of female buyers have been in, looking and purchasing firearms, and taking lessons. Because we are extremely focused on responsible gun ownership, gun safety, and the proper use and handling of a firearm,” said Kulwicki.
The number of background checks performed last month set an all-time record for the month of October. With 2 months left to go, 2016 is expected to set a new annual record.
