SENECA NATION, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Seneca Nation has decided their next President, and it will be Todd Gates.

“The Seneca people have spoken, and they have given me the profound honor of serving as our next President,” Gates said. “I am humbled and incredibly grateful to receive the support and confidence of so many Seneca from both Allegany and Cattaraugus. I look forward to honoring their trust and leading the Seneca Nation forward in meeting the challenges that face our Nation, the Seneca people and our entire community.”

Voting occurred Tuesday in the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus and Allegany territories.

Gates has served as the Seneca Nation’s Treasurer since 2014. While running as the Seneca Party candidate, he received more than twice the amount of votes as the next closest candidate, unofficial results say.

Current Seneca President Maurice John Sr. will be switching places with Gates, as he was elected Treasurer.

Gates will be sworn in next week.
